Introduction
When a persistent cough develops alongside hearing loss, daily life becomes really inconvenient. In traditional Korean medicine, both symptoms are seen as deeply connected to weakened lung function. This is because the lungs don’t just handle breathing—they also play an important role in maintaining ear hearing. In this post, we introduce 5 acupoints and effective acupressure techniques that can relieve both cough and hearing loss simultaneously. Experience symptom improvement through self-care that you can easily follow at home.
5 Acupoints That Help Cough and Hearing Loss
1. Dazhui — GV14
Location: The depression below the 7th cervical vertebra spinous process. When you slowly lower your head, you’ll see the most prominent bone at the back of your neck—the indented area directly below it is the Dazhui acupoint.
Benefits: In traditional Korean medicine, Dazhui is called the “treasure trove of immunity.” It strengthens lung function and fortifies the entire respiratory system to relieve chronic cough. At the same time, it boosts the body’s yang energy to improve physical weakness caused by hearing loss and promotes blood circulation to the ear.
Acupressure technique: Sit in a comfortable position, place your hand behind your neck, and press the Dazhui point with your thumb for 5 seconds slowly, then release. Repeat this 10 times. The effect is better when you continue pressing until you feel warmth.
2. Shanzhong — CV17
Location: The center of the breastbone, at the midpoint of a horizontal line connecting both nipples. It’s located in the 4th intercostal space (between the ribs), and you can find it easily by placing both hands on your chest and following the center line.
Benefits: Shanzhong is the central acupoint of the respiratory system and directly strengthens lung function. It quickly relieves cough and deepens breathing to improve oxygen supply, also addressing oxygen deficiency in the brain caused by hearing loss. It’s also very effective for respiratory conditions caused by stress.
Acupressure technique: Overlap two fingers (index and middle finger) and press Shanzhong slowly for 10 seconds. For best results, do this 3 times a day—once after each meal (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) with an hour gap after eating.
3. Lieque — LU7
Location: Above the wrist crease, approximately 1.5 cun (about 2cm) away. When your arm is extended, it’s in the hollow area directly above the end of the radius bone (radial styloid process) on the thumb side.
Benefits: Lieque is the connection point between the lungs and large intestine, making it a key acupoint for treating respiratory conditions. It quickly stops cough and simultaneously stimulates the meridian connected to the ear, showing excellent results for improving hearing loss. It also has immediate effects on cough caused by the common cold.
Acupressure technique: Find Lieque with your opposite thumb, then press it for 10 seconds at a level where you feel slight discomfort. Press deeply but don’t force it, and repeat about 5 times per day.
4. Fenglong — ST40
Location: Below the knee, on the outer side of the shin. Located 8 cun (about 10cm) down from the center below the knee following the shin toward the ankle, approximately 2.5cm to the outer side of the tibia.
Benefits: Fenglong is an important acupoint responsible for overall immunity. It improves both the weakened lung function that’s the root cause of cough and the physical weakness that causes hearing loss. It promotes lymphatic circulation, enhances the body’s natural healing power, and is also effective for preventing chronic diseases.
Acupressure technique: Sit with your legs extended, place your thumb on Fenglong, and press slowly. Apply pressure at an intensity where you feel slight discomfort, pressing for 10 seconds each time and repeating 5 times. Perform on both legs for best results.
5. Chize — LU5
Location: On the inner side of the arm, in the crease where the elbow bends. When you bend your arm, it’s located on the inner side of the crease, just outside the biceps tendon.
Benefits: Chize is an acupoint that cools heat in the lungs and calms respiratory inflammation. It quickly relieves dry cough and sore throat, and improves hearing loss through strengthened lung function. It’s especially effective for cough caused by dryness in autumn and winter.
Acupressure technique: With your arm bent in front of your chest, press Chize with your opposite thumb. Press for 5 seconds, then release, and repeat 5 times. Acupressure with warm hands is even more effective.
