Introduction
Are you experiencing difficulty breathing from asthma and swollen legs at the same time? These are not simply two separate symptoms—they signal that weakened lung function and imbalanced fluid metabolism are happening in your body together. Especially worsening in fall and winter, these symptoms influence each other and create a vicious cycle. Traditional Oriental medicine offers specific acupoints that can improve these complex symptoms from the root. Today, I’ll share five essential acupoints for managing asthma and swelling simultaneously, along with effective acupressure techniques.
Five Beneficial Acupoints for Asthma and Swelling
1. Sanyinjiao (Three Yin Intersection) — SP6
Location: Located on the inner (medial) surface of the tibia, behind the bone, approximately 3 cun (about 4 cm) above the medial malleolus (the bony prominence on the inside of the ankle). When you press with your thumb, you can feel a depression between the bone and muscle.
Effects: This acupoint simultaneously strengthens the spleen, kidney, and liver functions, and is particularly effective at normalizing fluid metabolism to quickly eliminate swelling. It also has the effect of fundamentally improving constitution weakened by asthma.
Technique: Sit with your legs extended and press firmly on the acupoint with your thumb for 3 seconds, then release for 3 seconds. Repeat 10 times per leg and perform twice daily—morning and evening. Proceed slowly as there may be some tenderness.
2. Dazhui (Great Vertebra) — GV14
Location: When you bend your head forward, the 7th cervical vertebra is the most prominent bone at the back of your neck. Dazhui is the depression directly below this vertebra, similar to a dimple. You can locate it precisely by feeling a slight tenderness when pressed with your finger.
Effects: This is the key acupoint for asthma treatment that strengthens lung and overall immune function. In particular, it immediately alleviates shortness of breath and fatigue caused by asthma, and is also excellent for preventing common colds.
Technique: Since this location is difficult to reach by hand, use a heated stone, warm heat pack, or ask your partner to help press vertically with their thumb for 3-5 seconds. Repeat 15-20 times per session and perform 3-4 times per week.
3. Tanzhong (Chest Center) — CV17
Location: The exact midpoint of the line connecting both nipples on the sternum. Medically, this corresponds to the 4th intercostal space (space between ribs). It’s the location where your fingertips naturally touch when you place your hand on your chest.
Effects: This is the most important acupoint for alleviating asthma symptoms. It strengthens lung qi (vital energy) and makes breathing deeper and easier. Simultaneously, it improves chest circulation and relieves blood stasis caused by swelling.
Technique: Lie on your back and press vertically with your index and middle fingers overlapped for 5 seconds. Perform three times daily—morning, midday, and evening—repeating 10 times each. Maintain moderate pressure; pressing too firmly may cause discomfort.
4. Shenshu (Kidney Transporter) — BL23
Location: At the waist level, approximately 1.5 cun (2 cm) lateral to the depression below the 2nd lumbar vertebral spinous process (the bone you feel at the lower back when bending forward), on either side of the spine’s midline.
Effects: This is the most direct acupoint for strengthening kidney function and normalizing fluid metabolism. It is exceptional at eliminating swelling while simultaneously replenishing vital energy depleted by asthma throughout the entire body. It is particularly helpful for asthma patients who frequently experience fatigue.
Technique: Stand upright and place both fists at your waist, then press with your thumbs for 5 seconds and release for 5 seconds. Repeat 15 times per side and perform twice daily—morning and evening. Starting with warm hands makes the technique even more effective.
5. Guanyuan (Gate of Origin) — CV4
Location: On the body’s midline, approximately 3 cun (about 4 cm) below the center of the navel. You can locate it naturally by slowly sliding your finger downward from the navel along the midline.
Effects: This acupoint strengthens the body’s fundamental vital energy (Original Qi), and is one of the most important tonifying acupoints in Oriental medicine. It fundamentally improves constitution weakened by asthma and swelling, normalizes fluid metabolism, and supports lung function.
Technique: Lie on your back and massage with your overlapped index and middle fingers in circular clockwise motions 100 times. Gentle and consistent stimulation is more effective than forceful pressing. Performing this before bed enhances effects through better sleep.
5-Minute Self-Care Routine
This is the golden combination routine that addresses asthma and swelling simultaneously. Investing just 5 minutes every evening can produce noticeable results within 1-2 weeks.
Step 1 (1 minute): Sit comfortably and apply acupressure to Sanyinjiao (SP6) on both sides simultaneously. Press firmly with your thumbs for 3 seconds and release for 3 seconds. Repeat 10 times. This acupoint serves as the gateway to eliminating swelling.
Step 2 (1 minute): With your partner’s help, apply heat stimulation to Dazhui (GV14). You can massage in circular motions with warm hands or place a warm heat pack on it. When this acupoint is activated, asthma symptoms immediately feel lighter.
Step 3 (1 minute): Lie down flat and gently massage Tanzhong (CV17) with your fingers. Repeat 10 times until you feel lung qi flowing smoothly.
Step 4 (1 minute): Sit up and gently tap Shenshu (BL23) with your fists. Repeat 20-30 times until you feel warmth. Be conscious of your kidneys awakening.
Step 5 (1 minute): Lie down and massage Guanyuan (CV4) in clockwise circular motions 100 times. This is the concluding step of the entire routine and the core of improving your constitution.
Additional Tips: Drink a cup of warm water before starting the routine and avoid exposure to cold air for 30 minutes after completing it. The most important factor is consistency. You need to repeat this daily for at least 2 weeks to see results.
