Introduction
Have you ever experienced sudden coughing along with leg cramps at the same time? While these symptoms may seem like separate issues, they actually result from weakened respiratory function and impaired meridian circulation working together. In traditional Chinese medicine, there are acupoints that can relieve both symptoms simultaneously. Today, I’ll introduce five acupoints effective for both coughs and leg cramps, and show you acupressure techniques you can practice at home right away.
Five Acupoints for Coughs and Leg Cramps
1. Dazhui — GV14
Location: It is located in the depression below the spinous process of the seventh cervical vertebra. When you bend your head forward, you’ll see the most prominent bone at the base of your neck, and the hollow area directly below it is Dazhui.
Benefits: As the master acupoint for the entire respiratory system, it calms coughs and strengthens lung function. Simultaneously, it boosts vital energy throughout the body, improving qi and blood deficiency that causes leg cramps.
Technique: Locate Dazhui with your thumb, then press slowly for 3 seconds and release for 3 seconds, repeating for one minute. Alternatively, applying warm moxibustion for 15 minutes is also effective.
2. Shanzhong — CV17
Location: Located on the breastbone, at the midpoint between the two nipples. This corresponds to the fourth intercostal space (between the 4th ribs).
Benefits: As an important acupoint on the chest, it deepens breathing and suppresses the cough reflex. It also calms the mind and body, easing anxiety caused by cramps.
Technique: Overlap your middle and ring fingers and gently press Shanzhong. Press as you inhale and release as you exhale, following your breath rhythm, and repeat for about 5 minutes.
3. Lieque — LU7
Location: Located 1.5 cun (approximately 2cm) above the wrist crease, toward the elbow. It can be found above the radial styloid process (the wrist bone on the thumb side).
Benefits: As an important acupoint on the lung meridian, it directly stops coughs and promotes smooth breathing. By promoting peripheral circulation, it also helps improve leg cramps.
Technique: Using your opposite thumb, locate Lieque and press firmly for 10 seconds, then rest for 10 seconds, stimulating each arm for 2 minutes.
4. Fenglong — ST40
Location: Located below the knee, on the lateral side of the tibia (shin bone). It is located 8 cun (approximately 24cm) down from the outer edge of the knee toward the ankle.
Benefits: It is an important acupoint that directly relieves muscle cramps in the lower extremities. Simultaneously, it regulates gallbladder function, improving coughs caused by nervous tension.
Technique: Sitting down, bend your knee slightly, then press Fenglong with your thumb while massaging it in circular motions. Repeat for 2 minutes on each side, twice daily.
5. Chize — LU5
Location: Located above the elbow crease on the bent elbow, on the lateral side of the biceps tendon.
Benefits: By clearing heat from the lungs, it is especially effective at calming dry coughs. By promoting qi and blood circulation in the arms, it improves whole-body metabolism and prevents leg cramps.
Technique: With your arm extended, locate Chize with your opposite thumb, and press for 3 seconds and release for 2 seconds, repeating for one minute. Stimulating it three or more times daily is effective.
5-Minute Self-Care Routine
By following this acupressure sequence in the morning and evening, you can manage both coughs and leg cramps simultaneously.
Step 1 (1 minute): Place your warm fingers on Dazhui and slowly massage while transferring warmth. This awakens vital energy throughout your body.
Step 2 (1 minute): Rhythmically press Shanzhong in time with your breathing while promoting qi and blood flow in the chest.
Step 3 (1 minute): Simultaneously stimulate Lieque and Chize on both sides to activate the entire lung meridian. 30 seconds on each side.
Step 4 (2 minutes): Adequately stimulate Fenglong on both sides while releasing tension in the legs. 1 minute on each side.
By consistently repeating this routine, you’ll notice a reduction in cough frequency and improvement in nighttime leg cramps starting after 3 weeks.
