Introduction
Have you experienced chest tightness along with wrist pain at the same time? These symptoms may not be simple muscle pain. In traditional medicine, this is seen as a sign of “reduced cardiopulmonary function” and “insufficient qi and blood circulation.” Today, I’ll introduce five proven acupoints that can relieve both symptoms simultaneously.
Five Acupoints for Chest Pain and Wrist Pain
1. Neiguan — PC6 (Pericardium 6)
Location: Two cun (approximately 3 cm) above the wrist crease, in the center between the palmaris longus tendon and the flexor carpi radialis tendon. With the palm facing upward, it’s located between the tendons in the center of the inner wrist.
Effects: It immediately relieves heart stress and anxiety. It has the characteristic of improving wrist pain along with heart palpitations, chest flutter, and insomnia. As an important acupoint of the Heart and Pericardium meridians, it promotes whole-body circulation.
Acupressure Method: Using the fingerprint side of your thumb, apply firm pressure slowly for 3-5 seconds. Circular acupressure for 30 seconds is even more effective. Perform on both hands 3-4 times daily.
2. Zhongfu — CV17 (Conception Vessel 17)
Location: On the sternum, at the exact midpoint of the line connecting both nipples (4th intercostal space). You can find it by placing your index and middle fingers together to locate the hollow area in the center of the chest.
Effects: This acupoint, known as “the meeting of qi,” directly relieves chest tightness and shortness of breath. It stabilizes irregular heart rhythm and restores whole-body vitality, also improving tingling sensations in the wrist.
Acupressure Method: Gently press vertically with your thumb to a depth of 3-5 mm. Avoid forceful stimulation, and repeat slowly about 10 times, synchronized with your breathing. It’s best to perform this one hour after eating, in a comfortable position.
3. Waiguan — TE5 (Triple Energizer 5)
Location: Two cun (approximately 3 cm) above the wrist crease on the dorsal (back) side, in the center between the radius and ulna. Looking at the center of the wrist from the back of the hand, you can clearly feel the groove between the two bones.
Effects: It’s the most powerful acupoint for directly relieving wrist and arm pain. It governs the Triple Energizer meridian, regulates whole-body energy metabolism, promotes chest qi circulation, and improves cardiopulmonary function. It’s very effective for wrist stiffness and arm tingling.
Acupressure Method: Apply firm pressure with the thumb of the opposite hand for 3-5 seconds. A pressure level where you feel slight soreness is most effective. Stimulate both hands once in the morning and once in the evening.
4. Xinshu — BL15 (Bladder 15)
Location: Below the spinous process of the 5th thoracic vertebra, 1.5 cun (approximately 2 cm) lateral to the posterior midline. Since it’s located on the back where your hand can’t reach, seek help from a family member or use a massage stick.
Effects: As the “shu point” of the heart, it fundamentally strengthens heart function. It’s excellent for improving prolonged chest tightness and heart-related symptoms. It also releases tension in the back and shoulders, improving circulation that extends to the wrist.
Acupressure Method: Apply firm pressure with your thumb vertically at a depth of 5-10 mm for 3-5 seconds. Perform circular acupressure for 30 seconds until you feel your chest become more comfortable. It’s beneficial to receive professional help 2-3 times per week.
5. Qimen — LR14 (Liver 14)
Location: Below the nipple, in the 6th intercostal space, 4 cun (approximately 5 cm) lateral to the anterior midline. It’s located by lying on your side, following the ribs downward to the 6th rib, then extending laterally.
Effects: Meaning “the gate of qi,” it manages liver qi flow and improves whole-body energy circulation. Chest tightness and wrist pain are closely related to reduced liver function, and this acupoint is very effective at addressing both symptoms simultaneously.
Acupressure Method: While lying on your side, slowly apply pressure with your thumb for 5 seconds. Repeat about 10 times while breathing deeply. Performing this once daily in the evening also improves sleep quality.
5-Minute Self-Care Routine
Perform the following sequence daily, in the morning or evening:
Step 1 (1 minute): While sitting comfortably, stimulate Neiguan (PC6) on both hands for 30 seconds each. This is the foundation for stabilizing the heart.
Step 2 (1 minute): Slowly press Zhongfu (CV17) 5 times. Breathe deeply and release chest tightness.
Step 3 (1 minute): Stimulate Waiguan (TE5) on both hands for 30 seconds each to relieve direct wrist pain.
Step 4 (1 minute): If possible, stimulate Xinshu (BL15) for 30 seconds (you can skip if difficult to reach alone).
Step 5 (1 minute): To finish, slowly press Qimen (LR14) to complete whole-body qi circulation.
Expected Timeline for Results: With consistent practice for 2 weeks or longer, you’ll notice simultaneous improvement in both chest pain and wrist pain.
