What is Lower Arm (Xialian)?
Lower Arm (下廉, LI8) is an acupoint belonging to the Large Intestine meridian, located on the outer side of the forearm. In traditional medicine, “Lower” refers to the lower region and “Arm” refers to the edge or border, and this point is particularly effective at regulating Large Intestine function and relieving pain in the arm and elbow. It can quickly ease discomfort that occurs when working in the same position for long periods or when the arm is used excessively.
How to Find the Exact Location
Step 1: When you bend your elbow, the indent on the outer side of the elbow crease is called the Elbow Crease (LI11).
Step 2: From the Elbow Crease, move down along the center of the forearm toward the wrist approximately 4 cun (about 12cm). A cun is adjusted according to the individual’s arm length—it is the point closest to the Elbow Crease when the distance between the Elbow Crease and wrist is divided into thirds (the first 1/3 point from the Elbow Crease).
Step 3: It is located slightly forward along the outer edge of the forearm bone (radius). When you press with your finger, you will feel a slight tender sensation.
Acupressure Method
Preparation: Sit in a comfortable position and rest your arm on a table, then use your fingers to locate the Lower Arm point.
Acupressure Technique: Apply vertical pressure using the tip of your thumb (not the nail). Start by gently pressing for about 5 seconds, then gradually increase the pressure. Maintain the pressure for 10-15 seconds at an intensity that is uncomfortable but bearable.
Repetition: After a 3-second rest, repeat the acupressure. Perform 5-10 repetitions in one session, and practice 2-3 times per day.
Tip: The effect is enhanced if you wrap your arm with warm water or apply a heating pad after acupressure.
Key Benefits
- Abdominal Pain Relief: Regulates Large Intestine function to improve abdominal bloating, abdominal pain, and constipation.
- Elbow Pain Relief: Quickly alleviates elbow pain caused by tennis elbow or golfer’s elbow.
- Pain and Heaviness Throughout the Arm: Improves arm fatigue, numbness, and muscle pain while promoting blood circulation.
- Reduces Heat Sensation: Alleviates burning or heat sensations in the arm.
When to Apply Acupressure
It is most effective to apply Lower Arm acupressure immediately when symptoms are acute. It is particularly beneficial in the evening after heavy arm use, when the abdomen feels uncomfortable, or when the elbow or arm feels sore or stiff. For prevention, regular acupressure 3-4 times per week can help relieve arm fatigue beforehand. It is best to apply acupressure at least 1 hour after eating to avoid interfering with digestion.
Precautions
Avoid excessive acupressure, and refrain from applying pressure if the skin is damaged or inflamed. If you are pregnant, consult with a healthcare professional before proceeding. If you have chronic pain or illness, it is safer to apply acupressure after receiving treatment from a traditional medicine practitioner. Avoid sudden temperature changes after acupressure, and avoid strenuous arm exercises.
